Ohio Valley Steelworker Statue Now Has Ohio Historical Marker

Thursday, May 25, 2017

An Ohio Historical Marker for the Ohio Valley Steelworker Statue is now in place at the Main Library of the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.

Ohio Historical Markers tell the state’s history and is a way to honor important people and events.  The marker for the Ohio Valley Steelworker Statue shares the community’s story of the statue being created to honor the men and women who worked in area and iron steel industries beginning as early as 1856.  The statue was created by artist Dimitrios Akis and was cast at the Centre Foundry and Machine Company in Wheeling, WV.  It was dedicated in 1989.

The 3-ton steelworker statue once stood at the intersection of Route 7 and University Boulevard was moved in October 2015 across the street in front of the Main Library.  The statue overlooks the former Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel plant.  The statue was refurbished and painted.  A sidewalk, flagpole, and lighting were added.  Monies for the project were awarded to the library from PNC Charitable Trust, JC Williams Trust.

Next to the statue is a commemorative plaque  that  lists 19 names of men who  worked at the Steubenville plant of Wheeling Steel Corporation, enlisted for WWII and lost their lives.
